Ectopic pregnancy

ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus

risk factors
• History of PID (Pelvic inflammatory disease)
• Previous tubal surgery
• Previous tubal ligation
• Previous ectopic pregnancy
• Documented tubal pathology
• IUD (intra-uterine device)
• History of genital infections like Gonorrhea and Chlamydia
• Multiple sexual partners
• Previous pelvic surgery
• Cigarette smoking
• 1st intercourse before age of 18 years

Types
1) Tubal pregnancy
2) Ovarian pregnancy
3) Cervical pregnancy
4) Pregnancy in a rudimentary horn of uterus
5) Abdominal pregnancy

** it occures most commonly in fallopian tubes, commonly in the ampullary part**

Symptoms
• Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
• Mild cramping on one side of the pelvis
• Amenorrhea (missed period)
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding (usually spotting)
• Breast tenderness
• Nausea
• Low back pain

and if ruptured
• Severe, sharp, and sudden pain in the lower abdominal area
• Feeling faint or actually fainting
• Referred pain to the shoulder area

Complications
• Fetal loss (cause pregnancy can't be contineued)
• Infertility (when both are affected)
• Internal bleeding
• Hemorrhagic shock
• Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
• Maternal death
